Hitting The ‘Snooze’ Button-Help Or Hurt?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s this: if you wait long enough, whatever is “bad” for you will become “good,” and vice versa. For example, “drinking alcohol is bad for you.” Now, “a glass of wine a day is good for your heart.” Then there’s the whole marijuana thing. Not only have we been told it’s harmful, but shoot…for most of my life it’s been illegal. Now? Its use is hailed by some to be the secret to a good life. Anyway, you get the idea.
The latest to fall into this change cycle is “hitting the snooze button.” Five years ago, Sleep Clinic Services told us that hitting the snooze button was bad. Doing so told our body to trigger deep sleep hormones, etc.
Now? Well, hitting the sleep button isn’t just not damaging, BUT actually enhances individual performance. So, the experts at the Journal of Sleep Research have determined that hitting the snooze in the morning DOES NOT have a negative effect on sleep quality. Further, these same researchers have stated that sleeping for an extra 30 minutes is actually a help to performance once your awake.
So, once again, what was once “bad” is now “good.” The one thing that I want studied in this realm is the act of hitting the sleep button itself. I’m old enough to remember actually having a clock radio/alarm clock on the bedside table. I didn’t even need to be fully conscious to “hit the snooze.” Now, that this is on my phone? Good Lord, I have to be alert and focused to make sure that my finger is touching the right bar and that I don’t knock the obnoxious beeping device on the floor. At that point, I might as well get up.
