Scenic North Carolina Park Opens New Disc Golf Course This Week
There are two fast growing sports/activities in the United States that I’m totally unfamiliar with. The first is pickleball. I’m convinced that pickleball is trying to take over the world. Another is Disc Golf. In a way, it’s kind of crazy that I’m not at least moderately aware of this as big as a golf nut as I am. Truth be told, for years I would see the disc golf baskets on poles in parks and wonder WTH? Maybe now is the time for me to get into the game. A new disc golf course opens this week in Asheville’s Aston Park.
According to WLOS-TV, Aston Park’s disc golf course optimizes six goal baskets in a compact space for a full 18 holes, open to disc golfers of all skill levels. There are three different tee-off points at each of the six goal baskets. Again, this might as well have been written in Chinese. If you’re like me, I’ve included a beginner’s guide to the sport of disc golf below.
First thing I’ve learned about disc golf is how much cheaper it is to build its courses. Even the smallest of executive golf courses cost millions to construct. The Aston Park disc golf course in Asheville was built courtesy of a $5,000 Neighborhood Matching Grant through the City of Asheville along with a matching $5,ooo from the South French Broad neighbors of the park (more on them in a second).
Aston Park is located at 300 Hilliard Avenue in Asheville. All are invited this Thursday (October 26) for a big grand opening and ribbon cutting event for the Aston Park disc golf course scheduled from 3:30-6:30. In conjunction to the official festivities, there will also be live music and scavenger hunt and more. The grand opening event for the Aston Park disc golf course will be hosted by the South French Broad Neighborhood Association.
