According to CNBC Make It, over a third of Americans aren't getting the quality of sleep that they need. Due to this, many turn to different sleep supplements, including melatonin and magnesium. But which of these two is the best?
Shelby Harris is a licensed clinical psychologist. She says that of the two melatonin is much more likely to help you fall asleep and stay that way all night. She says that while magnesium may help you to sleep, there isn't enough research to prove that it is actually helpful for most people.
Most experts agree that if you are going to use melatonin or magnesium to help you sleep, its best to get it from foods, not supplements. You should also be careful about taking any new supplements and talk with your doctor before taking them. This is especially true if you have a underlying sleep disorder because both melatonin and magnesium aren't effective treatments for sleep disorders.
Melatonin is a hormone that is produced by the brain when its dark. It helps your brain and body to know when its time to sleep and aids your circadian rhythm. Due to this, it can be very helpful with things like “help with delayed sleep phase disorder, jet lag syndrome, shift work sleep disorder and sometimes insomnia,” Harris says.
