Here’s why this South Carolina lake has reportedly been polluted. According to The Charlotte Observer, a few residents living at Lake Wateree are suing Duke Power and are reportedly seeking millions in compensation.
They are claiming the chemicals used to control mosquitos in the area also spread cancer causing material. They reportedly believe those chemicals polluted fish in the Catawba River and many of the basin’s lakes. The lawsuit was filed last week in Kershaw county. The center of the suit claims Duke Power used a mosquito killing oil that contained strong long lasting toxins. Those toxins they believe are tied to liver damage, cancer and other ailments.
Here’s why this South Carolina lake has reportedly been polluted. In a direct quote from the Charlotte Observer, ” The residents say Duke should have known it’s spraying would spread hazardous PCB’s. But the company continued to conduct the program. And it concealed the fact the oily substance it spread on the lakes including Wateree contained the toxic chemical”.
Duke spokesperson Ryan Mosier said the matter is being looked into. And gave this quote to the Charlotte Observer via email,“Duke Energy takes environmental allegations seriously and we are investigating these, which relate to a historic program for our lake system,’’“As we review details of the litigation, we will thoroughly review the mosquito control program, the subject of these allegations.’’
