It is right around this time of year my family and I start talking about tubing. My love for it started when I went to college at Western Carolina University. Plenty of rivers and creeks to float down in the western part of the state. Just 1 North Carolina river ranked best for tubing in the country. USA TODAY compiled a list of the nation’s best. I think they left one off. At least it’s our favorite.

USA Today released their top ten choices for best tubing rivers. And I’m listening. It’s part of their “10 Best Reader’s Choice Awards”. River tubing has become a favorite summer past time because it is inexpensive, family friendly and really almost anyone can enjoy it.
Asheville, North Carolina We Are Looking At You
Coming in at number 10 on the nationwide list is The French Broad River in Asheville, North Carolina. This river has some history. According to our source, USA Today, it is the 3rd oldest river in the world. Really? I have lived in North Carolina most of my life and did not know that. I do love learning new things about our wonderful state.There are several ways you can access tubing in the mighty French Broad.
Here’s How You Get To It
One of the access points to the French Broad river is in the River Arts District in Asheville. There are other put in site’s near Marshall that offer views of cliffs and forests. Rosman is a great put in point to float the upper French Broad. Here is the thing, no matter which river you choose you will most likely have a wonderful day on the water but here’s my pick.
For years my family has traveled just a short drive-up Highway 74 from the Charlotte area to the Green River. It is nestled close to Lake Lure and Tryon, North Carolina near Asheville. There are several floating operations to choose from there. Personally, we go to Green River Tubing. It is just the one we landed on but I am sure the others are delightful as well. We love the Green River because you get some thrills along the way.
Our family loves to float but we also love riding a little white water too. And you can float the green river for three hours or choose a whole day. Either way you will see lots of beautiful mountain scenery, cool waters and just the right amount of challenge. I would not recommend it if you just want a super lazy float down a wide river. We like to tie our tubes together and float as a family. So much fun.
