Captain Jim’s DIY Corner: Paint Maintenance
Don’t put that leftover paint away until you do this.
You just finished that weekend painting project. Time to put away the leftover paint. Before you do, take just a few moments to make things easier for yourself in case you need that paint down the road.
-Use a big permanent marker to label the paint can with room information (kitchen, dining room, etc.). It’s also helpful to put the month and date of the original project.
-If it’s a custom color, protect the paint store recipe label with some clear packing tape. You never know if you will need another gallon a year from now.
-Seal the cans thoroughly to keep the paint fresh. Before long-term storage, clean the channel around the lip of the can so you get a good airtight seal. Tap around the circumference of the lid with a rubber mallet or the heel of a shoe.
-Store all paint in one place where it is protected from the elements and large temperature swings.
Until next time, happy DIYing!
-Jim Slade
