A Beautiful Moment In Waxhaw
A Waxhaw Mom says she broke down when classmates did this for her son with Down Syndrome.
Laurie Maddex caught this touching moment on her phone. Here is what she says happened:
Hi. I’m the blubbering mess of a mom watching the track tryouts tonight.
Here’s Zeke finishing his mile run, dead last, and the entire rest of the group running back from the finish to cheer him on to the end.
*edited to add:
Zeke has Down syndrome. He’s been going to the voluntary track workouts for a few weeks now, but this is his first track experience outside of Special Olympics. He’s been working his TAIL off trying to run this mile without stopping to walk. On the first practice he barely made it 100 yards. He stopped to walk every 30 seconds. I was DYING in the stands watching him struggle. Something finally clicked this week and he figured out how to push through with the encouragement from the other kids and from his coaches (and some serious pep talks in the car before practice). Zeke’s got this (track, school, LIFE IN GENERAL) in him. The rest of us need the patience and the belief in him to get him through the finish line.
Also, please feel free to share. We’re beyond proud of our boy and the community that has rallied around him.
