Powerball Jackpot Lures North Carolina Hopefuls
The Powerball jackpot is creeping up again, which means North Carolina residents are hoping to cash in on the big prize.
Tonight’s estimated jackpot is a whopping $747 million. I’m not sure what the threshold is for office lottery pools to start forming, but it feels like this is the time.
“I think it depends office to office, but last time what really got people excited was hearing that it was record-breaking,” said Ben Cole, who works in an office in Charlotte’s South End. “If you mention ‘millions of dollars’ it’s enough to get anyone excited.”
No one matched all the Powerball numbers Saturday night, making tonight’s drawing the fifth largest jackpot in Powerball history. Although there were no winners of the big money, there were more than two million winners of lesser prizes, including four players who matched all the white numbers and won a million dollars. Those winners were in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida and Oregon.
How does tonight’s jackpot stack up against the biggest of all time? The largest Powerball jackpot in history was $2.04 billion and went to a lucky California winner in November. (The lump-sum, after-taxes amount ended up being a LOT less, a common story among big prize winners.
