Six Foods That Surprisingly Originated In North Carolina
North Carolina is home to many different foods and drinks. Here are some of the most famous foods that originated in North Carolina according to Visit NC.
1. Cheerwine
Cheerwine was created in North Carolina during World War I. It was made in L.D. Peeler’s wholesale grocery store in Salisbury during a sugar shortage. In downtown Salisbury, North Carolina there is a Cheerwine festival in celebration of its creation.
2. Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘N Biscuits
In Charlotte, 1977, Jack Fulk and Richard Thomas founded the first Bojangles’ restaurant. There are about 800 Bojangles’ locations today.
3. Pepsi
In 1898, pharmacist Caleb Bradham created Pepsi-Cola in a drugstore in New Bernin. He created the cola in a drugstore with the hopes to create a fountain drink that was delicious and helpful in boosting energy and aiding digestion.
4. Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937, in Winston-Salem, by Vernon Rudolph. The first Krispy Kreme donuts were made by borrowing ingredients from a nearby grocer and sold for 25 cents a dozen.
5. Texas Pete
Texas is surprisingly not the birthplace of Texas Pete hot sauce. It was created in the 1940s in Winston-Salem by three brothers, Thad, Ralph, and Harold Garner; their father Samuel Garner; and “Mother Jane.” The business started in their family home by making the sauce in pots on their stove.
6. Mt. Olive Pickles
Mt. Olive Pickles originated in Mount Olive in 1926. It’s now the largest privately held pickle company in the nation.
