Passenger Crash-Lands Plane After The Pilot Passes Out
A passenger who was onboard a small plane recently jumped into action on Saturday crash-landing the aircraft on Martha’s Vineyard, after the pilot passed out according to the New York Post.
The pilot was a 79-year-old male who suffered a medical emergency during the final approach. The controls of the 2006 Piper Meridian were taken over by a female passenger during this terrifying moment.
At around 3:15 on Saturday, the woman landed the aircraft in a grassy area near a runway. The left wing was broken in half by the impact of the “hard landing” says police.
The woman was left unharmed after being evaluated at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. However, the pilot had to be medevacked to Boston Hospital while in life-threatening condition.
It is unknown if the pilot’s medical condition was caused by a medical episode or the impact of the crash.
The pilot and passenger were the only two onboard the plane and were both from Connecticut.
The two had flown from Westchester, New York, to the Vineyard and neither were identified by cops.
Two hours after the plane wreck was cleared the airport’s primary commercial runway was shuttered.
The plane was taken to a secure location after the incident.
Currently, the crash is under investigation by state police, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
I am sure this scenerio has run through a lot of our minds. What happens if the pilot can’t land the plane. Could you auctually land the plane? I think with the help of air control some of us might be able to do it.
I’m not a technical person. I would probably be a bad choice. There are lots of buttons and switches. That is scary enough to stop my attempt. I just hope there is another pilot riding on the plane that I am flying on.
