According to The Stanly News & Press, a plane crashed at Camp Barnhardt just after taking off from the Stanly County Airport.
Two people were injured after the plane crashed down on Monday afternoon. The plane was owned by a local flight training school called Pressley Aviation. It went down shortly after takeoff which was around 4:30 p.m.
Colton Smith, North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper, said that the plane’s occupants notified the airport that the plane was having engine trouble before crashing. Both the names of the individuals in the crash have not yet been released to the public.
Smith said, “It was a student and an instructor working on flight time.” He also said that the plane had turned around and was attempting to head back to the airport. “Once they realized they weren’t going to make it to the airport, they aimed for the field here.”
When the plane crash-landed, it hit the trees right behind the health lodge. The plane lost its right wing and landed nose-first. The right wing was found just behind the rest of the aircraft on the ground. The flight instructor called 911 and was walking with minor injuries according to Smith. The student, however, had “significant injuries,” Smith said, also noting that both were taken to Atrium Health Cabarrus. The United States Air Force Fire Department responded to the call with its crash team, along with the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office and units from the Badin VFD.
