North Carolina Roller Coaster Reopens After Crack Repair
A North Carolina roller coaster has reopened after undergoing work to repair a large crack in the steel structure. The Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds welcomed its first riders since the repairs Thursday.
Carowinds shut down the roller coaster in June after a park visitor took video of a visible crack in one of the support columns. In the video, the track could be seen swaying as the passenger cars made their way around the turn.
Park officials said at the time that all rides were inspected daily, but those inspections never revealed the structural failure. Fury 325 was shut down shortly after the video surfaced online. A state investigation followed the discovery. The failed structural component was replaced.
According to Spectrum News, the North Carolina Department of Labor’s Amusement Device Bureau conducted an inspection before the ride reopened. Carowinds also hired a third-party testing firm to ensure the ride’s safety.
