Every year, the United States records more than 10,000 speed-related deaths, but it’s more dangerous in some states than others. Speeding kills — especially in South Carolina.
According to a new study by an Ohio personal injury law firm, South Carolina ranks third among speed-related fatal crashes. More than 43% of all fatal crashes in the Palmetto State had one thing in common — speeding. South Carolina also ranked third among the top ten states for the most crashes overall (4,897).
Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Fitch Law Firm study looked at the number of fatal crashes per state between 2017-2021 and the number of those crashes where speeding was primarily responsible.
Rhode Island ranked worst for speeding-related fatalities, with more than 46% of all fatal accidents involving driving too fast. Hawaii had the second-worst speed-related death percentage.
NHTSA officials cite traffic congestion and running late as the most frequent contributing factors to aggressive driving and speeding.
