North Carolina Woman Competing In 2nd Olympic Games And She’s Only 20 Years Old
A couple of winters ago, my wife and I took a weekend trip with another couple to the mountains of North Carolina. The ladies wanted to see snow and we found it in the beautifully quaint town of Bryson City. One of the things that struck me was the strong current and whitewater of the Nantahala River that flows through it. Evy Leibfarth literally grew up traversing those waters in her kayak. Later this month (and into August) she’ll be representing our country in Paris in her 2nd Olympiad. Not only that, but she’s making history in the process as the first US woman to qualify for an Olympics in three different canoe/kayak events. Oh yeah…and Evy Leibfarth is only 20!
Evy Leibfarth Has Been Making History For A While
This isn’t the first time that Evy and history have been used in the same sentence. According to Teen Vogue, “Evy Leibfarth was 14 when she became the top ranking female paddler in the United States. She was 15 when she earned her first World Cup medal, making her the youngest competitor to ever claim the title. At 17 she was a part of the inaugural group of women to compete in canoeing during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021; she was also the youngest woman to compete in this event.”
Where You May Have Seen Evy Leibfarth Recently
Although she grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, for several weeks each year, you can find her paddling, training, and fighting the waters of The US Whitewater Center in Charlotte. Leibfarth tells WCNC, “It is probably one of the bigger courses out there, and you really have to learn how to time your strokes and keep your boat moving. That’s been really helpful as I’ve been training across the world.” So if you’ve found yourself struggling in the center’s waters and wondered, “Who is that girl totally dominating out there?” Now, you know!
When Will Evy Leibfarth Compete In The Olympics?
North Carolina’s favorite whitewater daughter will be competing in her events at the Paris Olympics August 2-5. However, to her family and those that know and love her, Evy Leibfarth will always be this girl.
