North Carolina’s Annual Best Week Is Here
On one hand I get it. You’re going say, “You’re a golf nut and your biased.” Just because you’re not wrong doesn’t mean I’m not right. There is not a better week in Charlotte or the state of North Carolina than Wells Fargo Championship Week.
This event has become so much more than a professional golf tournament. Now, on the surface, IT IS A FANTASTIC golf tournament (one of the most prestigious on the PGA Tour). And it is held on one of the best golf courses in America (Quail Hollow Club). However, with more than $30 million in charity donated, The Wells Fargo Championship has become a gift to the city and state that keeps on giving.
Our city never shines better or brighter on the national stage than it does during this week, and after the tragic law enforcement shootings this week, we could sure use a little Wells Fargo Championship shine.
When Did The Wells Fargo Championship Begin?
The initial playing of the tournament was in 2003 when a different bank name, Wachovia, was the title sponsor. David Toms won that initial event and the love affair between the city of Charlotte and annual professional golf at Quail Hollow Club began.
When Is The Wells Fargo Championship?
Wells Fargo Championship week officially begins Monday (5/6) and runs through next Sunday (5/12). All ticketing information you need is available here.
The Charitable Arm Of The Wells Fargo Championship
As I mentioned earlier more than $30 million benefitting literally hundreds of charities has been generated by this tournament for the Charlotte area since 2003. To highlight just one, according to a recent press release, for the fourth year, the Wells Fargo Championship, in partnership with Atrium Health and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, announced that over 11,000 CMS second graders are receiving a book for summer reading this year.
Each student receives a “Reading Champs” box that includes a reading selection titled Book Uncle and Me, a pencil, a keychain, a frisbee from the Wells Fargo Championship, a bookmark donated by Atrium Health, and a letter from CMS Superintendent, Dr. Crystal L. Hill. Over 44,875 books have been donated through this partnership.
What Else Is Happening During Wells Fargo Championship Week?
I thought you’d never ask. For the second year in a row, The Celebrity Putting Challenge takes place on Monday around lunchtime.
This is where local celebrities from media, sports, and politics around Charlotte come together to participate in a nine-hole putting contest with the goal of winning $100,000 for the winning celebrity’s chosen charity. It’s a fantastic event. If you’re taking in Monday’s practice round and want to check it out, the event gets underway at 11:45am.
