Florida Schools Giving Parents Some Options
Could this be coming to the Carolinas soon?
With their children facing an abridged school year in light of the coronavirus pandemic, many parents have been wondering whether their children will be promoted to the next grade or have to make up the time they missed. In Florida, the answer is, “Your choice.” Governor Ron DeSantis on Tuesday announced that parents will be given the option to have their children repeat the grade they’re in this year or allow them to graduate to the next grade.
Choosing the latter shouldn’t make things too difficult for the students; DeSantis also revealed “all testing” will be called off for the rest of the school year. “Requirements for graduation, promotion and final course grades will be evaluated as if those assessments did not exist,” he said. Schools in Florida are expected to remain closed until April 15th.
Officials have yet to decide whether students will return to class or finish the school year through online courses, DeSantis says. Is it a good idea to give the choice to parents? What would be worse for a kid: to promote him to the next grade when he isn’t ready, or to hold him back when he doesn’t need to be?
