Update: Mother Now Charged After Car Stolen With Child Inside
A mother has now been charged following a car theft in east Charlotte earlier this week.
Thirty-five-year old Keeyamah Williams was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after her car was stolen with her four-year-old child inside. According to a CMPD release, the thieves led police on a chase before crashing the car on North Graham Street at Rumple Road. The child was found safe inside the vehicle. Three teens face various felony charges in connection with the Monday afternoon incident.
Police say Williams left the child in the running car while she was inside a laundromat. According to WCNC-TV, the child was in the car for some 20 minutes before the incident.
Surveillance video reportedly shows the teens leaving with the vehicle. A short time later, the stolen vehicle crashed and two suspects, ages 14 and 15, were arrested. They face charges of kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle. Another juvenile, a 12-year-old, has been charged with conspiracy. He was reportedly serving as a lookout at the time of the car theft.
Amazing work by CMPD patrol officers, our Real Time Crime Center, and the Aviation Unit. Two juveniles were taken into custody after stealing a car with a 4-year-old child inside and leading officers on a pursuit. (1/2)
