Teen Falls 60 Feet At North Carolina Waterfall
A teen was hospitalized after falling 60 feet at South Mountain State Park Saturday. It happened near the park’s popular High Shoals Falls.
Park Superintendent Jonathan Griffith told WSOC-TV the victim was 18 years old and was transported to a local trauma center.
Griffin said the teen ignored several warning signs and a physical barricade in order to reach the top of the falls. Rescue efforts were made more difficult by ice that was left over from a recent storm.
Located just south of Morganton, North Carolina, South Mountain State Park covers nearly 21,000 acres. High Shoals Falls is the park’s most visited feature and is definitely worth the hike. Like many North Carolina waterfalls, High Shoals Falls is beautiful and awe-inspiring, but dangerous if proper safety precautions are not taken. To stay safe while enjoying North Carolina waterfalls, follow these simple tips:
- Observe warning signs and stay on designated paths. Warning signs are typically posted for a reason. Stay on designated paths and avoid going off-trail, climbing on rocks or cliffs, or entering restricted areas.
- Wear appropriate footwear. The rocks and paths around waterfalls can be slippery and uneven. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction.
- Stay a safe distance from the edge. Avoid getting too close to the edge of the waterfall, as the rocks can be unstable and the force of the water is nothing to be reckoned with.
