How To Prepare For Severe Storms In The Carolinas
A lot of strong storms have been hitting the Carolinas recently. This means it is time to get supplies ready that may be needed in case of emergency. These are the items that should be in your home according to WCNC Charlotte.
Items that everyone should have:
- A container to hold all storm supplies.
- Bottled water or gallons of water in the house at all times.
- Non-perishable food items like canned foods (make sure you have a can opener!).
- Flashlights and extra batteries.
- First aid supplies including but not limited to bandages, ointment, and disinfectant wipes.
- A battery-powered radio and an NOAA Weather radio.
- A helmet for each person in the house (kept in your safe room in case of a tornado warning).
Suggested items:
- Toilet paper and other personal hygiene items.
- Paper and pen/pencils to play games, take notes, etc.
- Sleeping bags and/or warm blankets for each person in your home.
- Pliers of wrenches to turn off different utilities if needed.
- A whistle to signal for help in an emergency
- Important documents.
- Emergency reference materials like a first aid book.
- Diapers and formula if you have an infant.
- Extra pet food if you own pets.
- Cups and utensils.
- Duct tape and plastic sheeting in you need to shelter-in-place
- A change of clothes for each person under your roof. Makes sure these are temperature appropriate! It is good to also include hats, gloves, jackets, and closed-toe shoes.
- Rain gear.
- Cash.
- Cards or games to pass the time and take your mind off of the situation.
- A fire extinguisher.
- Cotton t-shirts of dust masks to help filter air.
