Ways To Keep Your Dog Calm This Fourth Of July
The Fourth of July is loved by many people across the US, but a lot of dog owners dread this holiday. The loud noises from the fireworks and other activities tend to make pets incredibly anxious. Usually, if your pet is stressed, so are you. Luckily, Hartz has a list of tips to help keep your dog, or dogs, calm this July 4th.
Create a safe space for your dog.
Before the fireworks start make a safe area for your dog. When the fireworks are about to begin, keep your dog inside. Be sure to remove any objects from the room you keep your dog in that can cause harm, many dogs become destructive when stressed. Make sure their go-to spot for hiding is available, this could be in their kennel or even under the bed. Once they hide, don’t pull them out, the space that they hide in will be the least stressful location for them. It can also help to close all blinds and curtains to keep bright flashes out. If you’re afraid your dog may have an accident lay down some dog training pads.
Help to calm your dog with aromatherapy.
There are currently a lot of sprays out there to help calm your dog. Talk to your vet to get a prescription if your dog’s reaction is severe. There are many over-the-counter remedies available and at-home oil sprays like lavender. However, make sure that whatever oils or sprays you are using are safe for dogs or any other pets that may be around. The best way to use the sprays for your dog is to spray their coat and on a bandana or something else that can be loosely tied around their neck.
Give your dog plenty of exercise.
Wear your dog out during the day before the celebration. Three or four hours before fireworks start, take your dog on a long walk, a run, or to the dog park. Playing catch is one of the best ways to make your dog happy and tired. If you release your dog’s energy before the fireworks, they will hopefully be more tired and less stressed.
Massage your dog’s nerves away.
Massages can be very relaxing for humans, so why not give your dog a massage to help them relax. Have your dog lay down and gently massage their shoulders, back, legs, neck, and the tips of their ears. You can even do this while holding them during fireworks to reduce anxiety.
Cuddle your dog to help with stress.
During and after fireworks it’s very important to spend a lot of quality time with your dog. Cuddling with your dog will help to calm them and will tell them that everything is okay.
Provide distractions.
A good way to help your dog stay happy during fireworks is to keep their focus away from the noise. This can be done by cuddling, playing, or even giving your dog a toy to distract them. You can also try turning on the TV or radio to block out some of the sounds outside.
Make sure your dog has a proper ID at all times.
Taking your dog to the fireworks isn’t recommended, but even owners who don’t bring their dog need to make sure their pet is micro-chipped and wearing an ID collar. When your dog is nervous it can cause them to try and bolt, they can run if taken off lease outside or out of the front door if it’s opened for just long enough. Always keep your dog on a leash if outside and keep them far away from any fireworks.
