Dreaming Of A White Christmas… These North Carolina Places Offer You The Best Chance
What I wouldn’t give to see a white Christmas just once. Though truth be told if given the choice I may pick snow for New Year’s over snow for Christmas. My birthday is New Year’s Day and for so many years all I wanted for my birthday was snow. We’ve gotten it a couple of times on January 2nd in Charlotte but I’m still waiting on one of those holidays. And in Charlotte, it is certainly possible but not probable. But while the chances are slim in the major cities, a white Christmas is a possibility in some places in North Carolina.
Our friends at BetCarolina conducted research on the possibility of a white Christmas and where in North Carolina it could happen. They also looked to find out how many people truly are dreaming of the white Christmas. According to their research, 64% of North Carolinians are hoping for just that. You can lump me into that percentage. Nationwide that places North Carolina 14th out of 50 states when it comes to the desire for holiday snow. South Carolina was 17th.
So where are the top 5 places with the highest chance of having a white Christmas in North Carolina? It should be pretty obvious that it’s in the mountains!
- Mount Mitchell (42,5% chance)
- Flat Springs (23.8%)
- Swannanoa (17.7%)
- Boone (16.1%)
- Marshall (11.3%)
While none of those odds are great by any means, but certainly better than the cities. Those odds- Raleigh (3.1%), Durham (2.3%), and Charlotte (1.4%). So noted, I won’t get my hopes up. But there is A chance. To create these percentages BetCarolina utilized data from Climate.gov that shows how often these places received snow on December 25th between 1991 and 2020.
