The Charlotte, North Carolina Skyline Is About To Change
Charlotte, North Carolina has had a beautiful skyline for many years now. Many of the skyscrapers have added neon lights in the last decade. Now the Charlotte, North Carolina skyline is about to change. I think it will not be an improvement. I also hope it doesn’t start a disturbing trend that is present in many major cities.
The Duke Energy building is one of the most prominent buildings in the uptown area. It is a large shiny building that looks like it has two handles attached to the top. Wells Fargo, one of the city’s largest employers owns the building. They want to make some changes.
Last night they received city approval to attach two large signs stretched across the building’s handle part on both sides. According to Axios, the two signs will read “Wells Fargo.” The Wells Fargo letters are 14 feet tall, the same as Truist’s. It’s worth noting the scale of the building. 550 South Tryon St. is the second tallest skyscraper in Uptown and tops 786 feet, compared to Truist’s 659 feet.
The city’s approval wasn’t unanimous. Some say it will make the city more visually interesting. Others fear it will cheapen its look. I have to go with the latter.
Let’s hope this doesn’t open up the floodgates of advertising all over uptown buildings. Just my humble opinion but we are already bombarded with product messages in our lives. Do we need it slapped all over the skyline of Charlotte?
