Myrtle Beach South Carolina To Host PGA Tour Event In 2024
Earlier this year I got wind of The PGA Tour plotting a return to professional golf in the golf capital of the world, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And now, rumor has become reality. In 2024, The Myrtle Beach Classic will be contested at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Now, that’s the good news. Here’s the bad news.
The Myrtle Beach Classic will not be one of the star-studded events such as The Wells Fargo Championship held last week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. That tournament is one of The PGA Tour’s “Designated Events.” This means that nearly all of the best players in the world will be competing. The reason? Well, there’s twenty million reasons. Last week’s winner, Wyndham Clark took home $3.6 million. The ENTIRE PURSE for the upcoming Myrtle Beach Classic will be $3.9 million.
The Myrtle Beach Classic will be a second-tier event taking place opposite of one of the tour’s designated tournaments. So, yes, IT WILL be a PGA Tour event. However, if you’re looking for even one of the top players, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.
I really hate this.
Myrtle Beach is the biggest and best golf destination in the country. As such, I think it deserves better than this. Instead of being held at the same time as one of these big events, why not conduct The Myrtle Beach Classic on a week where no other PGA Tournament is held? Of course, I know the answer, money. Perhaps once this initial contract with the tour (3-5 years?) expires, a sponsor could be found as well as a different date on the calendar.
One thing that can’t be argued is the venue, it is choice. As pointed out by wspa.com, The Dunes Club has played host to several pro golf events. The season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on PGA TOUR Champions was played there from 1994 to 1999. The venue also held the PGA Tour Q-school finals in 1973.
