Dishin’ With Debbie-A Star Has Fallen
Has there ever been a really popular movie or TV show that the whole world is buzzing about, and for whatever reason, you just can’t seem to get on board?
Maybe it’s a fashion or cooking trend that is all the rage, but it’s just not doing anything for you. Or, is the latest song on the radio making a connection with all your friends, but you’re not hearing it? Well, that happened to a group of my girlfriends and me this past weekend.
These days you can’t get away from folks gushing about how wonderful the new version of “A Star Is Born” is. No one seems to have a bad word to say about it. According to reviews and opinions of critics and moviegoers alike, it’s the best piece of cinematic art to ever hit the screen. The acting, the singing, the songs themselves, the script, the directing are all worthy of Academy Awards. Even the dog in the film should get some trophy. So, Catherine Lane, Tanner’s wife Missy and myself couldn’t wait to have a girls’ day out and see what the buzz was about. So, we settled into our comfy theater recliner seats with our snacks waiting to fight back the tears we had been promised were sure to come.
Even Captain Jim challenged us not to cry. We were certain we would lose the challenge, but we were ok with that. The movie never seemed to pick up for us, we were unable to make that emotional connection necessary to bring tears to our eyes even once. It was fairly predictable, and after it ended, we looked at each other and said, “Is that it?” Of course people all around us were sobbing. The lady next to me was sniffing so much, Catherine was certain it was me. She leaned over to ask if I was crying…I think, hoping I had been moved to something. Alas, nothing. Anyway, on a positive note…we really enjoyed our girl time. And the pumpkin butter dessert we had at lunch did bring tears of joy to our eyes.
