A Few Thoughts About A Policeman
I’ve posted this picture before. On the left is one of our son’s best friends, Sam Robinson. Sam is the Senior Class President at Parkwood High School. His speech at graduation yesterday would rival in quality any from the best politicians in the world. He will attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall.
On the right is his father, Major David Robinson of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. And he is one of the finest men I know.
When I think “policeman,” I think of David Robinson.
Further, because I know the kind of man he is, the kind of son he raised, and the standards he has for men, I have a pretty good idea about the quality of those serving under him in the police department.
Now I am not naive, nor am I blind. Do I think ALL policemen are great? No. However, I think an overwhelming majority are. I feel they have answered a calling to protect and serve us.
Which brings me to this.
Paul Harvey (1918-2009) was a radio broadcaster for the ABC Radio Networks. He gave the “Policeman” speech on talk radio nearly 40 years ago and it is known as one of his best speeches
Mr. Harvey’s father inspired this speech. He was a police officer who was shot and killed while doing what police officers do every day.
You can be upset with the actions of some, but I implore you to consider that the vast majority of the police are like my friend, David Robinson.
