JonBenet Ramsey Murder Case Reviewed By Cold Case Team
A very tragic murder case from 26 years ago will get another look in 2023. This week the Boulder Police Department announced they consulted the Colorado Cold Case Review Team to have the JonBenet Ramsey murder case reviewed. According to People magazine, Boulder police gave an update on the decades old case this week. Detectives report receiving more than 21,000 tips, letters and emails. Furthermore, the press release references travel to 19 states to interview more than 1000 people in regard to the investigation. Although investigators point out DNA remains part of the case, the amount of evidence is small and is in danger of being consumed. However, police hope analytical and forensic experts in the Cold Case Review Team, will add to the probe. Officials in Boulder promise to never stop investigating the case that remains a priority in the department.
The parents of six-year-old pageant queen, JonBenet Ramsey, made a 911 call on the morning of December 26, 1996 to report the child missing. At first, they believed the case to be a kidnapping. JonBenet’s parents found a handwritten ransom note in their home. The $118,000 ransom demand, coincidentally enough, matched the amount of a recent work bonus awarded dad John Ramsey. And, the “alleged” abductors wrote the note with a sharpie on a pad that belonged to her mother. Unfortunately, later that day the family discovered the child’s body in the basement of their home beaten and strangled. Police followed numerous leads without success. Suspicions even swirled around family members. I remember this case so well, and how tabloids plastered the awful news on the front page every day. I was as guilty as anyone of suspecting the family.
Upon hearing the latest news, her father spoke with the press. Although John Ramsey told Fox News this gives him some hope, he worries the decision to have the JonBenet murder case reviewed by the cold case team is not enough. Ramsey recently petitioned to have an independent agency take over the case. He often expressed his frustration with the team investigating his daughter’s case. And, he even sent his own DNA to Ancestry DNA. Ramsey hopes that by having his file in the database, new technology could help build a more complete profile of a suspect. JonBenet’s mother, Patsy, died of cancer in 2006. Sadly, the case remains unsolved with no closure for those closest to the little girl. Hopefully the new review sheds light.
