North Carolina Infant Seriously Injured After Strike To Head At Local Game
This is a parent’s nightmare come true. A North Carolina infant has been seriously injured after being struck in the head by a baseball. According to WBTV, it happened Friday night at the Hickory Crawdads game.
A Lenior family decided to attend a local game on Friday night. Then tragedy struck. Hunt and Courtney Prestwood’s infant daughter Georgia was struck in the head by a foul ball.
Courtney had taken the infant to picnic tables to give her a bottle when the stray ball landed at the same spot. Courtney says she tried to cover her young daughter up, but the ball made it through a small opening.
Georgia did not cry, so her parents were immediately concerned. Courtney said, “That 45 seconds felt like it took 10 years off my life honestly. It was like a sigh of relief just to hear her cry.”
The baby was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center. Georgia had a CT scan that showed she had a fractured skull and a brain bleed. She was then airlifted to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. After being monitored over the weekend, the good news is that doctors released her on Monday.
The family didn’t think taking the infant to a game would be dangerous “It wasn’t like we’re like, ‘Oh, let’s take Georgia, three weeks old to a baseball game,’” Courtney said. “We wanted to be as a family and watch fireworks. So it’s not like, you know, and we could have pawned her off on a sitter, but that’s not a family event if all of us don’t go. I don’t feel like what we did was wrong. It just so happened the ball found her.”
Thank goodness she is OK. Family members started a GoFundMe to help the Prestwoods with Georgia’s medical expenses.
Best Children's Hospitals, Here's Where North Carolina Hospitals Stand In Latest US News Rankings
US News and World Report just released their 2023 Best Children’s Hospital Rankings. And three North Carolina Children’s hospitals are nationally ranked in a variety of specialties. A children’s hospital is something you hope you never need as a family. But in the event you do you want to go to the absolute best. This is why US News and World Report has compiled these rankings for the last 17 years. Because if your child is sick you want to spend your valuable time getting them to the care they need, not researching where to go.
Nationwide a total of 89 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. So how does US News create these rankings? According to their website, they collect data from a “clinical survey sent to nearly 200 hospitals” as well as a survey “sent to thousands of pediatric doctors nationwide”. That data is then sent to a North Carolina-based research firm (RTI International) which generates the rankings and analyzes the results.
Some of the data points included are clinical outcomes, efficient coordination of care, and the availability of care-related resources. Want more information on a particular hospital or speciality? You can find that via US News. Or you can keep reading to see the three best children’s hospitals in North Carolina as well as the top 10. I sincerely hope your family and no one you know ever have to take advantage of these resources. But rest assured that quality care is nearby if you do need it.
