NC State Basketball Player Reprimanded For Flipping Off Referee
Comedian Chris Rock once had a great bit in a stand-up routine that kept repeating the same mantra. It was something along the lines of, “I don’t condone, but I understand.” That’s the way I and anyone else who has ever competed at high levels of basketball or any other officiated sport feels about North Carolina State’s DJ Horne flipping off a referee.
Tuesday night, the Wolfpack’s leading scorer led his teammates to an 88-76 win over the Wake Forrest Demon Deacons. With 2.2 seconds left in the game, Horne was fouled and headed to the free throw line. It was the moment when the referee turned his back that Horne low-keyed the ‘double shotgun’ in his direction.
DJ Horne will forever go down in NC State history as a legend 😂

Again, I don’t condone DJ Horne flipping off a referee, but I understand. Perhaps the only human beings on planet Earth that can cause a man to lose it on the regular are wives and referees. In fact, as I think about it, referees are a lot like wives. They only see what they want to see and they always think they are right. Of course, I’m kidding. Don’t let my wife read this, okay? <G>
Simply put, in the heat of the moment, DJ Horne let his emotions get the best of him and unfortunately forgot that his game was on TV and cameras everywhere, at the moment, were focused on him. As you might imagine, his coaches were not pleased and let DJ Horne know of their displeasure. And to DJ’s credit, he owned his indiscretion on X (formerly Twitter). My sincere apologies for what happened at the end of the game. I got caught up in the heat of the moment and made a disrespectful gesture that I should have never done. That’s not who I am!

The ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) has reprimanded DJ Horne for flipping off the ref calling the gesture “unsportsmanlike and inappropriate.” Apparently, this is the extent of his punishment.
