Olive Garden Manager Fired Over Harsh Time Off Policy
Dining out continues to be a different experience due to supply chain issues and staffing shortages. Of course, not every change we see is directly related to the pandemic. However, things just aren’t the same as before for whatever reason. Many restaurant managers express frustration over personnel issues including finding workers to hire and getting them to actually show up. One such manager finally had enough. But, her handling of the problem caused more problems for her according to KCTV. An Overland Park, Kansas Olive Garden manager was fired after sending a harsh message to employees concerning time off. Her message read: “We are no longer taking ANY excuse for calling off. If you’re sick, you need to come prove it to us. If your dog died, you need to bring him in and prove it to us. If it’s a ‘family emergency,’ too bad. Go work somewhere else.”
And, she went on to say calling in more than once in 30 days after the posting of the message results in dismissal. She chronicled her dedication to work spelling out numerous times she worked sick, and once following a major car accident. The manager expressed frustration over employees’ complaints about shift schedules and time off. At one point in the message, she invites them to “go work at a bank” if they don’t like their hours. But, on a high note, she did end with a thank you to those who show up.
As you might imagine, the message went down like a lead balloon. Darden, the parent company, condemned the message for not aligning with company values. They confirmed they parted ways with this particular Olive Garden manager. Just last night we ate at a major chain experiencing lingering issues. Half the restaurant went unused despite crowds waiting for a table. And, they announced an 8 p.m. closing. They stopped seating at 7:30. This was the second time that happened at the same place recently. So, on one hand, I understand her frustration. But, as a manager, she had to realize her actions might not end well.
