Another North Carolina Town Adopts Social District And Here’s How It Works
The social district concept is nothing new. In fact, it became a thing in Monroe, North Carolina last year. And, another North Carolina town is adopting a social district. So, what is it? The district sets up boundaries allowing people to buy alcohol and carry it in between establishments as long as it is in the designated cup with the district logo. And, according to WSOC-TV, Gastonia plans to adopt the social district concept.
The city council reportedly approved the Gastonia social district concept in September. And, it goes into effect April 28 along Main Avenue from CaroMount Health Park to Broad Street. Furthermore, in order to be a part of the social district the city requires an application and training.
So, what are the hours for the Gastonia social district? The city reports the social district operates from 11 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Other Charlotte and surrounding communities already have social districts in place, including Plaza Midwood and parts of South End.
We actually have enjoyed the social district in Monroe, North Carolina for a while now with our friends. The area there recently experienced growth with several fun breweries, bars and a new craft cocktail spot. From what we experienced, it’s not the out-of- control free for all drunk fest some people might envision. It’s quite the opposite. We usually see people responsibly enjoying a drink, strolling in between businesses, socializing, grabbing some food truck fare and listening to live music.
The rules for social districts typically set well-defined boundaries, hours, procedures and serving amounts. For instance, the Monroe district requires purchasing all alcoholic beverages from establishments within the district, in specially labeled cups and consuming them within the district. Also, beverages must be consumed or discarded before entering a different business serving alcohol. But, feel free to read more about specific rules concerning Gastonia’s social district.
