South Carolina University Gives First Scholarships For Cornhole
I’m still trying to wrap my head around how pickleball has essentially taken over the world. Now there’s this! Gavin Hamann and Jaxson Remmick are two typical high school teenagers from Denver, Colorado. Well, they’re typical except they’ve now become the first ever high schoolers to get college scholarships for, wait for it, CORNHOLE! Oh, and it gets better. The groundbreaking school offering this opportunity? Charlotte residents don’t have to look far from home. It’s Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
I think the only thing that’s better than hearing that higher education can now be achieved through cornhole is finding out how Gavin Hamann came to the game in the first place. And actually, it’s a story not so dissimilar from other college athletes. I mean, how many college football players, baseball players, or basketball players can say, “Dad exposed me to the game.” A lot, right? “Dad used to toss the ball with me.” “Dad used to shoot hoops in the driveway with me.” Totally plausible and common. Gavin Hamann was exposed to cornhole when he started tagging along with his parents to the bar. WHAT?! You mean to tell me bad parenting is being rewarding with college scholarships? What a country!
Anyway, Gavin Hamann and Jaxson Remmick teamed up in high school and have basically become icons of the cornhole world. They are two-time American Cornhole League High School National Champions and have been declared 5-star recruits! Again…FOR CORNHOLE!
Now before you get too excited and race to take your kids to the bar with you this weekend, their Winthrop scholarships aren’t full rides, after all cornhole is only a club sport at Winthrop. That being said, the financial aid will cover about half of their schooling expense.
Now the real questions must be answered. Is there any NIL money in cornhole? I mean when I think cornhole, I think beer. Can a beer company sponsor an athlete who is still 4 years from being able to legally buy and consume their signature beverage?
What about insurance? Pitchers and runner have long been known to purchase policies from companies like Lloyds of London covering their arms and legs. Is there something available to guard against long term disability from “cornhole elbow” or torn rotator cuff from cornhole? Is this something we’ll be finding out Farmers Insurance does indeed cover?
These questions and more have yet to be answered but stay tuned. I can’t wait for the Winthrop press conference introducing Gavin Hamann and Jaxson Remmick as the first cornhole scholarship athletes.
