North Carolina Swimmers Looking To Qualify For Olympics
A group of North Carolina swimmers from the triangle area are looking to fulfill a lifelong dream and compete for Team USA at next month’s Summer Olympic Games in Paris France. When you’re a kid growing up playing basketball, baseball, football, etc., there’s always that chance you could one day “go pro” in your sport. Swimmers don’t have that option. The Olympic Games are THE goal. They are THE moment. And they only come once every four years. So, for these athletes, this is it…this is their moment.
How Do These North Carolina Swimmers Qualify For The Olympics?
In less than a week, the largest and most important swim meet in these athletes’ lives will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana at the US Olympic Team Trials. Here’s what’s kind of cool. For the first time ever, this event will be held in a football stadium. Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts will stage the event. A pool has been constructed specially for the event and the stadium’s jumbotron will be utilized to enhance the viewing experience for spectators.
Who Are These North Carolina Swimmers?
Coach Paul Silver is the man behind the nationally renowned Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team. Each year since 2001, this group has had swimmers qualify for the Olympic Trials. This year they send Hudson DeGroote, Wells Walker, and Ian Stutts to Indy. The trio’s training regimen has consisted of swimming m three days a week from, 5:00 to 630 in the morning. Also they swim Monday through Friday in the afternoons, and lift weights.
In What Events Do These North Carolina Swimmers Compete?
Hudson DeGroote will compete in the 400-meter individual medley (IM) event. NC State’s Wells Walker will be taking his shot in the 50-meter freestyle, and Ian Stutts will attempt to make the US Olympic Team in the 200-meter individual medley (IM). Walker’s excitement is palpable as he tells WRAL, “It’s going to be way more people watching me swim than ever before and that’s just crazy. There’s going to be 30,000 people in a stadium watching a swim meet.”
June 15-23 over 700 swimmers (including 408 men and 355 women) will be competing at The 2024 US Olympic Swimming Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
