Cheers To National Margarita Day Let’s Celebrate
I love scanning the calendar for the made up ‘holidays’ every year. Some are more exciting than others. For instance, we love pizza day, cheeseburger day and, of course there’s none more beloved than national margarita day. So, let’s celebrate with my favorite frozen Blueberry Margarita!
More About National Margarita Day
First of all, when is national margarita day and how did it come about? Well, this year, lucky for us it falls on Saturday, February 22. And, I’m sure any restaurant you can imagine will come up with special features on their menu in honor of the day. But, just how did it begin anyway?
You have a guy named Todd McCalla to thank. He just loves margaritas and decided to found a national day in their honor. After all, it’s the most common tequila based drink in the country. The tent poles of the cocktail are tequila, triple sec and lime. What you add after that is up to you. I have grown to love a spicy version. We use a spicy jalapeno tequila, muddled fresh jalapenos and throw in some pineapple juice. Then, we rim the glass with Tajin for that spicy salt addition.
We Customized A Spicy Version
In fact, during our many trips to Myrtle Beach, we have found a couple of spots that make a delicious one. We’ve spent many a sunny afternoon on Tortuga Island at Crooked Hammock. And, that’s when we basically ordered our custom version off menu. One bartender in particular began making it, and it was just right…like a Three Bears drink…just right! He had to teach the others to get the proportions to our liking. And, it became a joke as other staff recognized us and exclaimed, ‘oh, y’all are the spicy margarita group we’ve heard about.’ Not sure how I feel about returning to the bar so many times the staff talks about you when you’re not there! LOL.
Anyway, fast forward to a couple years later. The same group behind Crooked Hammock opened Big Chill Island House across the parking lot in the same area of Barefoot Landing. And, now, the spicy margarita just the way we like it is on their menu! We’re basically responsible for a movement. Again, not sure if I should be proud or concerned.
But, it’s national margarita day soon, and I wanted to make sure you have something to celebrate with friends. Take a look at this link for some variations on a spicy version, and we’ll share ours later this week. But, for now you can chill out with this frozen Blueberry Margarita that works great for Cinco De Mayo, too!
