As a self-proclaimed “foodie,” I’m always in search of some hidden gems everywhere I visit. And, typically, it’s not the big chain restaurants that stand out. Of course, they get the recognition. And, they certainly have their place in the food world. But, I love a good hidden gem. And, this South Carolina Mom & Pop restaurant lands inside Yelp’s 15 favorites in the nation. It’s none other than Lewis Barbecue in Charleston.
How Yelp Decided The 15 Favorite Mom and Pop Restaurants
According to WBTW, Entrepreneur and Yelp got together to compile a list of the top 15 “Mom and Pop” restaurants in the country. And, they combed through hundreds to find the 15 best. So, here’s how they arrived at the list. Yelp calculated rankings of independently owned and operated spots. The restaurants couldn’t have more than 4 locations. And, then they considered the volume and ratings of reviews for the establishments. Also, there were other qualifying factors in order to be considered, such as health scores. But, Lewis Barbecue passed muster, landing in the middle at number 7.
Who Made The Mom and Pop Favorite In North Carolina
And, the list wasn’t limited to barbecue restaurants. Although, the only other restaurant in the Carolinas making the list was Huli Sue’s BBQ & Grill in Asheville, North Carolina. However, Yelp did point out that only one business per state was eligible to be ranked in each category. They also compiled bests in home services and hotels/bed and breakfasts.

Now, a little about Lewis Barbecue. The spot prides itself in slicing up “true Central Texas barbecue” since 2016, according to their website. They have their own massive custom made smokers welded by pitmaster John Lewis himself. Lewis knows Texas barbecue from his time in El Paso to Austin. And, his expertise caught the eye of respected publications including Southern Living. And, lucky for us he ships his smoked meats around the nation. Also, they have a second location in Greenville, South Carolina.
