Legendary North Carolina Golf Course Named The Best
There are two places in the Carolinas that I’ve always said remove all stress from my life. Hilton Head, South Carolina is one. The other, as a golfer, occurs the moment I drive into the village of Pinehurst, North Carolina. No mention of Pinehurst is complete without talking about Pinehurst No. 2. And now, no mention of Pinehurst No. 2 can be made without mentioning that it’s been named the best golf course in the Tar Heel State.
Look, the Pinehurst Resort now boasts 10 courses (with the opening last week of “The Sandmines“), but there is only one course there that has hosted three United States Open golf tournaments (our nation’s national championship and one of the most prestigious in the sport), and is set to host another this June. That one is Pinehurst No. 2.
The venerable 18 hole golf course was built in 1907 by famed golf course architect, Donald Ross. It plays to a par of 72 (although that’s adjusted to a par of 70 for the US Open), and Ross himself said Pinehurst No. 2 was the fairest test of championship golf he ever created. And this is not a small list. He designed more than 400 in his life including the Prestigious Seminole Golf Club in Florida and The Broadmoor in Colorado. The North Carolina Golf Panel has just named Pinehurst No. 2 as the best golf course in the state.
The North Carolina Golf Panel is comprised of golf club managers and professionals and well as members of the media. In addition to Pinehurst No. 2, other courses on the list include Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines (Pinehurst) and Quail Hollow Club from here in Charlotte.
Pinehurst No. 2, recently named best golf course in North Carolina will once again host the US Open the week of Father’s Day this June.
