South Carolina On Surprising List Of Most Dangerous States
This weekend my wife and I are driving with our son to his summer internship in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Just in my head, I was thinking, “Okay, better be careful. States like New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, etc. do things a little differently. I need to keep a lookout. THOSE places are dangerous ones to be in. Come to find out, if I’m looking for peril, there’s not too many places more dangerous than right here in South Carolina!
WHAT?! Not only that, but the states that were on my awareness list, as well as others like California, aren’t even in the top ten in terms of danger. So what does “danger” actually mean? Here’s the scoop according to Forbes. The FBI gathers information from law enforcement agencies across the country, calculating crime cases per 100,000 people to determine the most dangerous states. When the numbers come together, they can help form a clearer picture of where and what kinds of criminal activity occur. Keep in mind, however, that numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Crime is a sociological phenomenon, and statistics don’t consider the influences of numerous economic and social issues.
So how does the Palmetto State end up on this dubious list? According to Forbes it’s a case of things improving in South Carolina, just not enough. Violent crimes HAVE decreased over the past decade, but a six-year high was reached in 2019 with more than 500 out of every 100,000 people experiencing violent crime (with a significant increase in homicide). Also, South Carolina has a high rate of assaults and higher-than-average poverty rates.
Here is Forbes list of the 10 Most Dangerous States.
10. Arizona
9. Nevada
8. Missouri
7. Alabama
6. South Carolina
5. Louisiana
4. Arkansas
3. Tennessee
2. New Mexico
1. Alaska
Would you have guess than more than half of the most dangerous states in America are in the south? And how about Alaska coming in at number 1? Alaska? Really?! Learn something new every day.
