123 Year Old Mill House Gets New Life As Trendy North Carolina Craft Cocktail Bar
There aren’t that many left, but when you see an old, North Carolina mill house two things come to mind. One, a time that’s “gone with the wind.” The North Carolina that my parents grew up in (1940s-1950s) had an economy that was driven by agriculture and textiles. Mills ruled the world. And the communities and homes that housed their workers are unmistakable reminders of that era.
The second thought is, what to do with a mill house that’s still standing? I’ve seen some people go in and remodel the inside to repurpose the home, but because of the simplicity of the initial layout, sometimes the juice on this endeavor isn’t worth the squeeze. Which is why I’m a huge fan of what the Built on Hospitality Group is doing with such a home.
There’s a 123-year-old mill house in NoDa that they are renovating to be a craft cocktail bar. Veteran Charlotte bar guy, Bob Peters is combining forces with BOH for “Chief’s.” The location is right next to the group’s famed Goodyear House restaurant. The name comes from Peters’ father’s nickname. He was a man known for his neighborhood hospitality and open-door policy with friends. According to Axios Charlotte, “You were always welcome in the Peters’ home, and when his parents entertained you were served a simple cocktail, classic southern snacks, and a warmth that made you look forward to your next visit.”
Chief’s cocktails will run the gamut from basic and tradition to sophisticated and trendy. All will use fresh ingredients. “Chief’s” will also serve simple and creative snacks as well.
The evolution from 123-year-old North Carolina mill house to NoDa craft cocktail bar will come to fruition by early next year if all remains on schedule. “Chief’s” exact locale is 3024 North Davidson St. across from the soon-to-be former Johnson YMCA.
