North Carolina Teenage Lifeguard Struck By Lightning
“Reach, throw, row, go with equipment, and go.” It’s amazing the things that you only learned once that have somehow remained on the hard drive. For those that have never been through any lifeguard certification, that is the order of rescue option when a swimmer is in distress. I went through lifeguard certification when I was fourteen (at the end of the summer) with every intention of being a lifeguard that next year, but I never did (found a job serving ice cream indoors, in the air conditioning). Anyway, growing up going to our neighborhood pool, there was nothing that looked cooler than being a lifeguard. You got to be at the pool all day and get paid for it! I’m 100% sure 15-year-old Brynnlee Steeger thought the same thing. This summer she worked as a lifeguard. Monday, Brynlee was struck by lightning on the job.
The Jesse C Carson High School junior was doing her lifeguard thing at the Landis Pool Monday when those severe storms started moving in. Brynlee was securing an umbrella from underneath a picnic table when she heard thunder clash. She dropped the umbrella and turned around to see a “huge mass of electricity” behind her.
Emergency crews arriving on the scene treated her for lightning strike. Brynnlee was taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation. She was able to go home around 24 hours later. She’s experiencing some nerve damage and mobility issues with her arm and will need therapy to regain strength in it. It’s not clear at this time how long these problems will persist.
Lifeguards are trained to save lives. When Brynlee Steeger took the job at Landis Pool this summer, I bet she never thought she’d be the one who would need saving.
