North Carolina Turkey Farmers To Bring Thanksgiving Cheer To India?
Admittedly, this headline is a little more than misleading. No, India is in no way, shape or form planning on celebrating the landing of the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock or the feast of the American pilgrims with the indians. No, in a “who knew this was even a thing?” category, North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper met with United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai on Tuesday in Raleigh at a turkey farm operated by N.C. State University. They were promoting a new international trade deal for turkeys.
That’s right, North Carolina gobblers could be headed to the Taj Mahal. Here’s the deal. The Biden Administration has closed a deal with India slashing tariffs from 30% to 5% on the importing of turkeys. So, that makes it WAY easier for North Carolina turkey farmers to do business with a country that’s home to 1.4 billion people. Fun fact: North Carolina produces more turkeys than all but two states.
Governor Cooper commented on the situation to WRAL, “The Biden administration has been working very hard with our global partners, recognizing that North Carolina has so much in the way of agricultural products. If we can open more doors across the world, that will help our farmers here and help the North Carolina economy.”
Back to that turkey farm visit yesterday. Governor Cooper and Representative Taj paid a visit to “Chocolate” and “Chip.” Shaking your head? How soon we forget. These are the two turkeys Biden pardoned last year at Thanksgiving. They were raised in North Carolina before being sent to the White House for pardoning. Now, they’re living out their days at the N.C. State turkey center south of Raleigh.
Thanksgiving Traditions Southerners Will Never Let Go Of
Thanksgiving traditions Southerners will never let go of are plentiful. As much as I love Christmas, I have to admit I am partial to certain aspects of Thanksgiving. I think it has something to do with the family gathering and the food, of course. And, I love Fall. Plus, it’s the start of the holidays, with so much more to look forward to. It’s also nice not having the stress of all the shopping and gift buying. Also, just like Christmas, Thanksgiving has many traditions people from all walks of life share.
But, according to Southern Living magazine, Thanksgiving traditions southerners celebrate are unique and deeply rooted. In fact, you hold them so close, you’ll never let go of them. Some of them may be less of a tradition and more of a subconscious habit. In any case, we embrace them just the same. This list reminds us of all those unforgettable moments shared around the table for the biggest feast of the year. I also added a few of my own to the list that I feel, at least in my house, are time-honored traditions. See if you spot any of your family in this list of Thanksgiving traditions southerners are proud to never let go of.
